What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle healing modality from Japan that treats the whole being, addressing problems and healing on all levels: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Its goal is to stimulate the person's own healing response.

Reiki (pronounced Ray Key) means Universal Life energy. It is based on the idea that there is a universal (or source) energy that supports the body's innate healing abilities. Practitioners seek to access this energy, allowing it to flow to the body and facilitate healing.

Reiki goes directly to the source of the problem even if it's unknown to the practitioner and client, and heals at a level and intensity that is appropriate for the client and the situation. After receiving a treatment the client usually experiences a feeling of deep relaxation and peace.

What to Expect From a Session

The client will arrive for a treatment in comfortable loose fitting clothing with any metal belts or jewelry removed. The client remains fully clothed during the session. The practitioner will ask about any conditions that are of concern and determine the best protocol to follow.

The client will recline on a massage table and may choose to be covered with a sheet or blanket. The Reiki energy is not lessened with the addition of extra layers of clothing or bedding. The treatment consists of the placement of hands in specific positions on the body to address any imbalances that may be present in the various organ systems or joints.

The body is not massaged or manipulated in any way and the treatment can also be administered with the hands suspended above the client. There are 3 basic layouts that can be expanded upon based on the client's needs.

Basic I are positions located on the torso.

Basic II are positions located on the head.

Basic III are positions located on the back.

During a first consultation Basic I and Basic II are performed along with special attention to any problem sites the client may have. If back problems are indicated Basic III may be used instead of or in addition to Basic I and II.

The client may feel warmth, tingling, or pulsing when the hands are in any position. The body may signal that the Reiki has located an affected area through a series of releases. These can range from increased stomach sounds to a slight twinge or possibly an itch or a cough. The Reiki can also travel from any hand position to another part of the body where it is needed.

After receiving a treatment the client usually feels a feeling of deep relaxation and peace.

After suffering a head injury in 2004, which resulted in the loss of my sense of smell and my sense of taste, I vowed that I would find a way to recover. Traditional medicine had very little to offer for this problem so I turned to acupuncture as well as other complimentary therapies. Through my efforts I recovered 30 smells in 4 years time. In 2009, I became interested in Reiki and after taking a Reiki class I decided to give Reiki a try. After four 3-hour treatments my sense of smell began to return. Within 2 months time I regained 25 % of my sense of smell. Food became much more enjoyable. I was able to smell the beach for the first time in 4 1/2 years!!!

I have become a Reiki Master so that I may be able to help others as I have been helped by this amazing modality.

Success Stories

Croup Cough/Ear Ache

The client, a 68 year old female, had problems with her ankle following a long recovery from knee surgery. The ankle had stiffened due to walking unevenly and favoring the affected knee. During the session, the knee was worked on but the ankle proved to be the main issue. A pulling and releasing sensation in the calf and ankle was felt by myself and the client. After the session was over, the client slipped on her sandal and could tell that her ankle felt different. She had much more flexibility in her ankle and improvement continued. Two weeks later she was back to doing the things she enjoyed.

Brain Tumor

The client, a 50 year old male, was diagnosed with a large inoperable tumor in the right side of brain in the last week of March 2010. He had Reiki done in person and remotely, in anticipation of an upcoming repeat MRI and biopsy. The doctors were surprised that the tumor had shrunk so much that they didn't think they would be able to do a successful biopsy. They reduced the drugs he was on in an effort to re-grow the tumor and scheduled another MRI two weeks later. He continued to receive Reiki remotely and this MRI showed the tumor had shrunk even more in spite of the reduction of meds. They were determined to do the biopsy and then were shocked that it was not the cancer they were expecting. Confident it must be a lymphoma, the biopsy was sent out to determine what meds would have the most effect. One week later, the biopsy returned but no cancer cells were found. This all took place in one months time!!!

Croup Cough/Earache

The client, a 5 year old boy, had been sick for a week and was not getting rid of an infection he had. He also had croup cough which was not helping matters and he was not able to sleep at night. I worked on him remotely and that was the first night he was able to sleep through the night. The second time I worked on him I started to get an earache. I called the mother and she informed me that his ears were fine. Four days later she called to tell me they were on the way to the doctors because he had an ear infection.

Jammed Finger

The client, a 10 year old girl, had jammed a finger during a basketball game and it was not getting better. I worked on her remotely and the next day she was able to bend the finger.

The client, a 57 year old woman, was scheduled for knee surgery the following week. Several Reiki practitioners worked with her for multiple sessions. She went back to the surgeon and he canceled the surgery and told her at this time she doesn't need it anymore.

The client, a 51 year old male, suffers with recurrent sinus problems. He was having a particularly difficult time due to seasonal allergies. I worked on him in person and his sinuses cleared and he was able to breathe again.

Relief from Pain After Knee Surgery

I had trouble recovering from knee surgery and was still experiencing pain and stiffness one year after surgery. I had one 2 hour treatment and within 2 weeks the pain had subsided and I was able to resume my active lifestyle.

Pulled Muscle at Gym

I didn't know how I did this but after leaving the gym one day I found I was unable to sit comfortably or put any weight on my left leg. After 3 days of little relief and worried I would not be able to go on a trip to Washington DC later on in the week I came for a Reiki session. My hip and leg were worked on as well as my lower back. I felt a quick release that went through my leg as it was being worked on. Then I turned over and laid on my stomach. While having Reiki done in the lower back position I felt a sensation move up my back and realized I had hurt myself while pulling a machine into the correct position. Once the session was over I was able to put pressure on the leg without pain. I was able to enjoy the DC trip with my children.

Reiki Session done in the studio in a chair or on massage table with client present.

Reiki Session done distantly. Very effective for clients that are not able to come to the studio. Suggested for clients in hospital or hospice. Good for family members or friends that live outside the area but still are in need of treatment.

Reiki Session done on animals. This can be done in person at the client's home or done remotely. Depending on the size and temperament of the animal, hands on method may be used or the Reiki energy will be projected to the animal.

Reiki Session done in client's home. There will be additional charges for travel and setup of table.
